The rain which started early on Thursday morning, continued intermittently all through Friday as a constant drizzle with a few heavy showers. Colaba recorded a rainfall of 36.2 mm, while Santa Cruz recorded 20 mm on Friday.

After a three-day dry spell the city received considerable rain on Thursday. The weather department attributed it to the low pressure area over the Arabian Sea, but said it had moved closer to the Konkan coast by Friday. "The low pressure area has moved closer to Mumbai causing these incessant rains," said V K Rajeev, director of weather forecast at the Indian Meteorlogical Department (IMD). When the atmospheric pressure at the sea level is lower than the surrounding areas it creates a low-pressure area. "The clouds formed due to the low-pressure area have been causing rainfall in the city," said Rajeev.

Temperature too dropped five to six degrees, from 31.2 degrees Celsius in Colaba on Thursday, to 28.3 on Friday. At Santa Cruz on the other hand there was a drop from 34 degrees Celsius on Thursday to 28.3 degrees Celsius on Friday. "The absence of the sun and the continuous rains throughout the day are the reasons behind the drop in temperature. Part of it can also be attributed to the South-Westerly and Southerly winds blowing at about 30 knots over the area," said a weather official.

While the rains and strong winds are part of monsoon, the drop in temperature is temporary. "Similar weather can be expected on Saturday, after which there may be less rain depending on the position of the low-pressure area," said Rajeev. Occasional showers can be expected in most parts of the city, while heavy rains will be restricted to a few areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 29-25 degrees Celsius, the Met department predicted.
